Reminder of Auction & Field Day

This just in from Dave McKinney:

A reminder of the NB Beekeepers field day on Saturday, May 12 at the Bee Store in Maugerville, (769 on Rte 105).  Fletcher and Mary will have a presentation at 10 am, lunch at 12 and auction sale at 1 pm of remaining stock from previous store. Everything for the beekeeper.

Winter Weather May Be To Blame for Canada’s Bee Deaths

Whatever is behind the high losses in our bee yards, the Canadian bee experts tell us that it is not Colony Collapse Disorder, the disorder that has devastated the US pollination industry and honey producers.

So, what is to blame? It’s too soon to tell for sure… However, apiculturists suspect that unusual winter weather — we’ve all remarked on it — could be the main factor behind this year’s staggering losses of honeybees in Canada.

The numbers for New Brunswick are still coming in, as beekeepers get out into the yards and check their hives, but it looks very much as if our beekeepers have suffered colony losses in the order of 80% or more overall.

Pesticide Toxicity and Bees

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs offers valuable information about pesticides, and precautions to protect the environment where pesticides are used. Of special interest to beekeepers is the section called Prevent Bee Poisoning, which reminds the agricultural community that honeybees are vital pollinators and can be greatly harmed by careless pesticide application.
