Wintered bee hives with a protected hive entrance.

On the front hive, the entrance shield has already been removed and we’re in the process of taking off the tar paper that was wrapped around the hives for winter.

The hive in back shows a piece of bent metal still in place to deflect cold wind from the upper entrance. Entrances are also covered in winter with 1/4-inch wire mesh that will let bees come out for a cleansing flight but keep the shrews (tiny rodents that eat bees) from getting into the hives.
